What to Serve Guests Who Don't Drink

The Mocktail Primer page from the Mocktail & Zero-Proof kit, explaining spirit alternatives, aperitifs and ready-to-drinks

At most holiday parties a few guests aren't drinking: someone is driving, someone is pregnant, someone quit, someone just doesn't feel like it. The usual answer is a two-liter of soda on the counter, which tells them they weren't part of the plan. Fixing that takes about ten dollars and five minutes of thought.

Make it look like a drink

Pour the zero-proof option into the same glass everyone else is using, with ice and a garnish. A coupe or rocks glass with a lime wheel reads as a drink. A red cup of ginger ale reads as an afterthought. It also means nobody has to explain what's in their hand, which is the part people who aren't drinking care about most. Never ask why someone isn't drinking. Offer the glass and move on.

Bitter and sour beat sweet

The most common mistake is serving juice. Adults drink cocktails for bitterness, acidity and a bit of bite, not sugar, and a glass of cranberry juice gets cloying by the second refill. Build around things that push back:

  • Tonic water or a good bitter soda for the bitterness a spirit usually brings
  • Fresh lime or lemon for the sour, exactly as you would in a real cocktail
  • Ginger beer for heat, the closest thing to the burn of alcohol
  • A sprig of rosemary or a strip of grapefruit peel for aroma, which does more work than people expect

Tonic, lime and a grapefruit twist over ice is a better drink than most of what's in the punch bowl.

Read the label

"Non-alcoholic" on a beer or wine label generally means less than 0.5% ABV, not zero. That's irrelevant to most guests and very relevant to some, especially anyone in recovery or pregnant. If it matters, look for "0.0" or "alcohol-free," and say what's in the bottle if asked. The same goes for cocktail bitters: they are made with high-proof spirit, so a few dashes add a trace of alcohol. Leave them out of the zero-proof build unless you know the guest is fine with it.

Buy one real bottle

Zero-proof spirits, non-alcoholic aperitifs and canned ready-to-drinks have improved a lot, and one bottle covers a whole night for a handful of guests. Pick one that suits the party: a bitter aperitif alternative for a spritz, or a gin alternative if you're already making G&Ts. Set it out on the bar next to everything else rather than hiding it in the fridge.

If you'd rather make the whole night about it, our Mocktail & Zero-Proof kit turns this into a full tasting: one bottle per category, each tasted neat, over ice and mixed, with 30 real bottles to choose from. It works the same way as any other tasting night, so our guide to setting up a tasting station still applies.
