Scotch has rules. Tequila has rules. Rum has almost none. There's no appellation governing it, no minimum age, nothing stopping a producer from calling a lightly-filtered spirit "gold" and a young blend "reserve." Style is set by habit and geography, not law, which means you have to read past the label.
White / Silver
Light-bodied and clean, often aged briefly and then filtered to strip the color back out. Faintly sweet, a little banana or vanilla. This is the tiki backbone and the correct Daiquiri rum. It's also the cheapest way to find out whether you like a distillery's house character, because there's no barrel hiding it.
Gold / Amber
Aged longer, or colored to get there faster. More vanilla and caramel than white, still light enough to mix. The mixing-friendly middle ground, and the tier where price and quality finally start tracking each other.
Dark / Navy Strength
Pot-still, often blended across multiple islands, bottled strong. Funky esters, char, dried fruit. "Navy strength" specifically means high proof, historically 57% ABV, and it's less about drinking neat than about having enough backbone to survive four other ingredients. A proper Jungle Bird or Navy Grog is built on this.
Agricole and Rhum
The genuine outlier. Distilled from fresh-pressed cane juice instead of molasses, mostly in the French Caribbean. Grassy, vegetal, almost tequila-adjacent. If you pour agricole expecting Caribbean gold rum you will think something has gone wrong; it hasn't, it's just a different animal. Try it in a Ti' Punch before you judge it in a Mai Tai.
What actually drives the flavor
Two things matter more than the style word on the bottle. Still type: column stills give a lighter, cleaner spirit, pot stills keep the congeners and the funk, and Jamaican pot-still rum is the far end of that scale. Where it aged: Caribbean heat matures rum roughly twice as fast as a cool warehouse, so a 5-year tropical-aged rum can drink like a 10-year from somewhere temperate. Age statements across regions are not comparable.
Taste them side by side
That's the whole design of our Rum & Tiki Night kit: three tiers, a real bottle list at each budget, and a flavor wheel to put words to what separates them.
