Mardi Gras Party Ideas

You don't need to be anywhere near New Orleans to throw a good Mardi Gras party. The holiday travels well because its signature elements, color, music, masks and a king cake, are easy to recreate at home for any size of gathering, from a classroom party to a big family blowout.

Lean into the colors

Purple, green and gold are doing most of the visual work at any Mardi Gras party, so lean on them hard. Beads, streamers, and a simple tablecloth in those three colors instantly read as "Mardi Gras" even without much else. If you're decorating on a budget, beads are the cheapest way to get the most color into a room, draped over chairs, hung from light fixtures, or piled into a bowl at the door for guests to grab on the way in.

Don't skip the king cake

A king cake, with its ring shape and colored sugar, is the centerpiece food of the holiday, and the tradition of hiding a small plastic baby inside (whoever gets the slice with the baby owes the next king cake, or hosts next year's party) is an easy, built-in game that needs zero setup. If you'd rather not bake, most grocery stores in regions that celebrate Mardi Gras carry one this time of year, and you can always hide a baby figurine in a doughnut hole as a shortcut.

Give the party a game or two to anchor it

Mardi Gras lends itself to simple carnival-style games: a bead toss, a limbo contest, or a doubloon toss are all easy to set up in a backyard or even a living room and give the party a clear activity beyond just eating and talking. If you've got teams or "krewes" competing against each other for a handful of these games, it adds a nice bit of friendly competition without needing real rules or scoring beyond a running tally.

Add a mask element

Masks are as central to Mardi Gras as the beads are, and a simple mask-making station, plain masks and craft supplies for guests to decorate, doubles as both a craft activity and the start of a costume contest. Judge on creativity, color use, or just crowd applause. It's a good activity to run earlier in the party since it keeps hands busy while people are still arriving.

Build in a scavenger hunt for younger guests

If kids are part of the party, a scavenger hunt built around the holiday's colors and symbols (something purple, something shaped like a mask, a bead of each color) keeps them occupied while the adults settle in. Hiding one special item, like a king cake baby, worth extra points is a simple way to raise the stakes without complicating the rules.

Keep the music going

Mardi Gras runs on brass and zydeco energy. A playlist of New Orleans jazz and brass band music in the background does a lot to set the mood even if nobody's actively dancing, and it gives the party a sense of place even in a living room far from Bourbon Street.

Our Mardi Gras Party Games kit builds this into eight ready-to-run games for 6 to 40 guests, including a purple, green and gold scavenger hunt with a hidden king cake baby worth 25 points, plus a Mask Contest with judge cards ready to go.
