A New Year's Eve party at home beats a crowded bar on almost every count: no cover charge, no shouting over the music, and you get to pick the people you're standing next to at midnight. The catch is the long stretch between dinner and the countdown. A good home party is really just a plan for those three hours.
New Year's Eve 2026 falls on a Thursday, so plenty of guests will have Friday off. That's good news for a later night.
When to send the invite
Send it three weeks out, which for New Year's Eve means right around December 10. People make plans for this night early, and the week between Christmas and New Year's is a blur. Put a start time and the plan for the countdown on the invitation, and ask about kids so you know whether you're hosting a family party or a grown-up one. Printable Invitations: What to Say has the wording.
Pick a start time that works for your crowd
- Grown-up party: start around 8 or 9 p.m. and run past midnight.
- Family party: the ball in Times Square starts its 60-second drop at 11:59 p.m. Eastern. On the West Coast that's 8:59 p.m. Pacific, so families out west can count down "with New York" and still get kids to bed. In Central time it's 10:59 p.m.
- Both: count down with New York for the kids, then again at your own midnight for the adults.
A 9 p.m. to midnight run of show
- 9:00, arrivals. Snacks out, drinks poured, bingo cards handed out at the door.
- 9:30, the first game. Something with teams, like trivia, to mix up the groups.
- 10:15, resolutions. Everyone writes a resolution anonymously, then the room guesses who wrote which one.
- 10:45, food refresh. Bring out the second round of food, something warm if you can.
- 11:15, countdown challenges. Quick one-minute games that build energy right when people start to fade.
- 11:45, pour the bubbly and hand out noisemakers. Glasses full before the countdown starts, not during it.
- Midnight, the toast. Then the awards, and the time capsule.
How much bubbly to buy
A standard 750ml bottle pours about six 4-ounce glasses. For a single midnight toast, that's one bottle for every six guests. If you're pouring bubbly all night, plan on at least one bottle for every three guests. Always have a non-alcoholic sparkling option for kids, drivers and anyone not drinking, so every hand has a glass at midnight.
Want the bubbly to be part of the entertainment? A blind sparkling wine tasting before midnight is a great early-evening game. How to Host a Champagne Tasting Party walks through it.
New Year's Eve games that work at home
- NYE bingo. Squares for the things that always happen ("someone says 'last time I'll see you this year'").
- New Year's trivia. Questions about traditions around the world. In Spain, for example, people eat 12 grapes at midnight, one for each chime of the clock, for luck in each month of the year.
- The resolution guessing game. Anonymous resolutions in a bowl, read aloud, everyone guesses the author.
- Countdown challenges. Minute-to-win-it style games with party supplies you already have.
- Time capsule cards. Everyone writes predictions for the coming year. Seal them in an envelope and open them next New Year's Eve.
- Would You Rather, Never Have I Ever and toast cards. Easy conversation games for the slower moments.
The small stuff that makes it feel like a party
- A countdown wall. A balloon or tinsel backdrop doubles as the photo spot.
- Noisemakers and hats for midnight. Hand them out at 11:45, not at the door, or they disappear.
- Enough flutes. Plastic flutes are fine. Running out at 11:58 is not.
- A plan for getting home. Line up rides or a place to crash before anyone pours a second glass.
