Housewarming Party Ideas That Actually Show Off the New Place

The hardest part of hosting a housewarming is that everyone wants to see the new place, but a guided tour for thirty people gets old fast. The fix is to turn the house itself into the entertainment: games that send people exploring on their own, instead of waiting their turn behind the host.

Let guests tour the house themselves

A scavenger hunt built around the new place solves the tour problem on its own. Give guests a list of twenty things to find room by room (a specific appliance, a piece of art, something only true of this house) and let them wander in pairs instead of following you around. It spreads people out naturally, which matters in a house that's still getting used to having a crowd in it.

Make the hosts the center of a couple of games

A housewarming is really a party about the people who live there now, so build a couple of games around them directly:

  • A "how well do you know the hosts" quiz works whether it's one person or a couple moving in, and it's a good one to read answers back to the group for.
  • A Price Is Right style guessing game, where guests guess what the house, a renovation, or a piece of furniture actually cost, almost always turns into the loudest part of the party. Keep a host-only answer key so nobody can peek.

Add a mingling game for a mixed crowd

Housewarmings often mix guest lists: coworkers, neighbors, old friends, new friends. A "find someone who" sheet, where guests fill in a line for each prompt ("find someone who has moved more than three times"), is one of the best icebreakers for a room where half the people don't know each other yet. It forces mingling without feeling forced.

Run a bingo card from the moment people arrive

A bingo card of things that happen at every housewarming (someone opens the fridge "just to look," someone asks about the mortgage) is an easy one to hand out at the door. It gives early arrivers something to do before the party fills up, and it keeps running quietly through the whole event.

Leave something behind for the new place

A small stack of wish cards, where guests write something they hope for the new home, gives the hosts a keepsake and gives guests a reason to slow down and write something personal instead of just signing a card. Put them near the door or the drink station so people notice them on the way in or out.

Time it around the tour and the toast

Let the scavenger hunt run during the first half hour while people are still arriving, save the Price Is Right game for once the group has settled in, and end with a short toast to the new place before the bingo and wish cards wrap up on their own.

Our Housewarming Party Games kit has this whole plan ready to print: a 20-item house tour scavenger hunt, The Price Is Right: Home Edition with a host-only key, a 20-question hosts quiz, and a Find Someone Who icebreaker sheet, all using name blanks so it fits any household, for 8 to 50 guests.
