The wrapper leaf drives most of a cigar's flavor and strength, more than the filler inside it. If you learn to read three wrapper types, you can predict roughly what any cigar will taste like before you light it.
The three wrappers that matter
Connecticut Shade is pale and thin-veined, grown under cheesecloth tents in the Connecticut River Valley and Ecuador. It's creamy, mild, and faintly sweet: a reliable starting point for a first cigar.
Habano is medium-brown, originally Cuban seed and now mostly grown in Nicaragua and Ecuador. Expect leather, pepper, and a firmer draw. It's a step up in intensity without being difficult.
Maduro is dark and oily from extra fermentation or fire-curing, which converts starches into sugar. It's sweet, roasted, and full-bodied: the wrapper aficionados tend to reach for.
Matching a whisky style
The same ladder of intensity applies to whisky. Bourbon, American, at least 51% corn, aged in new charred oak, brings vanilla, caramel, and corn sweetness that plays well with a Connecticut wrapper. Scotch varies by region: Speyside runs fruity and approachable, while Islay runs peated and smoky, which stands up to a Maduro. Irish and Canadian whiskies, typically triple-distilled or blended, are the most forgiving starting point if you're pairing for a first timer.

A cigar's flavor shifts across three stages. The first third is mildest, as the cigar warms up. The midpoint is the fullest flavor, with a steady burn. The final third is the boldest and warmest, and often a favorite.
