Christmas Party Games for Adults (That Everyone Will Actually Play)

Friends toasting with red wine over a holiday dinner table with a lit Christmas tree behind them

The best Christmas party games for adults have three things in common: anyone can play them with a drink in one hand, they don't need a long explanation, and they get people talking to someone they didn't arrive with. Here are the ones that work for a living room full of friends, a family gathering or an office party, plus how to string them into a night that doesn't stall.

The white elephant gift exchange

The classic, and the one most likely to go on too long. A few rules keep it moving:

  • Set a budget and say it on the invite. $20 to $25 is a common range. Everyone sticking to it keeps the gifts comparable.
  • Draw numbers. Number one picks and opens a gift. Everyone after that either opens a new gift or steals one that's already open.
  • Cap the steals. After a gift has been stolen three times, it's frozen and stays put. Someone who loses a gift can't steal it right back on the same turn.
  • Give number one the last word. When every gift is open, the first player gets one final chance to swap. It makes the worst number the best one.

For a group over 20, set a timer for each turn or the exchange will eat the whole night.

The Left-Right gift pass

Everyone sits in a circle holding a wrapped gift. The host reads a short story out loud, and every time the story says "left" or "right," everyone passes their gift that way. When the story ends, you keep what you're holding. It takes ten minutes, it works for any group size, and it's one of the few games where the people who weren't paying attention are the most fun to watch.

Christmas movie trivia

Twenty questions is the sweet spot. Play in teams of three or four so nobody gets put on the spot, read each question twice, and give a small prize to the winning table. Mix easy questions (Elf, Home Alone) with a few that start arguments (yes, the Die Hard debate counts).

The ugly sweater contest

Put it on the invite so people actually dress up. Use secret paper ballots, not a show of hands, so the vote is honest and the result is a real reveal. Give out more than one award: Ugliest, Most Creative, Best Homemade and Most Likely to Light Up all get laughs.

Card and conversation games

These fill the gaps between the big games and are perfect for the part of the night when people are eating:

  • Guess the Movie: one person acts or describes a holiday movie, the table guesses.
  • Holiday charades: one person acts, a team guesses, a timer runs.
  • Most Likely To: read a card ("Most likely to regift this exact present"), everyone points on three.
  • Would You Rather: easy, clean and endlessly arguable.
  • Holiday party bingo: squares for the things that always happen ("someone mentions the weather," "a gift gets stolen twice"). Mini candy canes make good markers.

How to run the night

  1. First hour: arrivals. Hand out bingo cards at the door and let card games run at the food table.
  2. Main event: white elephant. Do it once most guests have arrived and before anyone needs to leave.
  3. Trivia and charades. Teams keep the energy up after the gift exchange.
  4. Last: the sweater vote and awards. Collect ballots during trivia, announce the winners near the end.

Send the invitation two to three weeks out. December calendars fill fast, and people need time to find a sweater and a gift. Printable Invitations: What to Say covers the wording.

Pair it with a cocoa bar or a cookie swap

Games are better with something to sip and snack on. A hot cocoa bar works for every age (our Hot Cocoa 101 kit has the full setup), and a cookie exchange gives everyone something to take home. See How to Host a Cookie Exchange.
